Cappuccino,
friar's coffee

According to some, the first
cappuccino - the famous Italian coffee drink with steamed milk foam - was made by a capuchin friar.
Friar
Although there are no historical sources
to support the story, the name
'cappuccino’ is said to take origin from the 17th century
capuchin friar Marco
d’Aviano.
Capuchin coffee
After the Battle of Vienna in 1683, the friar found bags of coffee
left by the Turks and made the very first coffee with steamed milk foam, a
‘capuchin coffee’, 'cappuccino'.
Haircut
Others say the coffee drink takes its name from its appearance. The white
milk in the middle with the dark rim around, recalls to mind the typical haircut
of the capuchin monks, with their shaved heads and only a brim of hair left.
Breakfast
Whatever the origin, cappuccino is indispensable for a Milanese breakfast.
Sometimes it is dusted with cacao and it is usually accompanied with a
cornetto, a sweet croissant.
Marocchino
A Milanese variant of the cappuccino is the marocchino (Moroccan), a kind
of inverted cappuccino served in a small glass.
The
cacao goes on the bottom of the glass, than the steamed milk foam and only at last a shot of espresso coffee.
