Expo 2015 will change Milan

Milan will host the Expo 2015 under the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. The Expo will give way to innovative projects for quality living.

Nutrition and food quality

Nutrition and food quality are the core themes of the Expo, touching on environmental protection, sustainable development, food security and renewable energies.

Sustainable development

For the inhabitants of Milan this means innovative and sustainable projects will be developed for new residential areas, low-emissions public transport and more green spaces and fresh air.

Vertical wood

One of the most interesting projects is the ‘vertical wood’ by architect Stefano Boeri for Porta Nuova, a new district in the heart of the city. The project features two towers with 900 trees of 50 different species on it, that should reduce air pollution and noise hinder.

Fashion City

Other projects are a Fashion City in the Garibaldi-Repubblica area, ecological residential areas, a European Library of Information and Culture at Porta Vittoria and a Cinema Center at Bicocca.

Fair complex

The Expo itself will take place in Rho and Pero, north of the city, where Milan’s actual fair complex is situated. It will use a surface of 1,7 square kilometers.

Symbol

A 200 meters tall tower in the old fair area near the city center  should become the symbol of Milan, as the Eiffel Tower became the symbol of Paris when the French capital organized the Expo of 1889.

Bicycle paths

New roads and metro lines, but also bicycle paths and waterways will connect the Expo area with Milan city.

Investments and jobs

The event is expected to attract 30 million visitors and 20 billion euros of investments, and to create 70 thousand jobs.
