The
secret to expat happiness
Many
surveys suggest that the secret tot expat happiness is the successful
integration of the accompanying partner and the kids and getting the
finances in order.

As happy a
life as possible
According to Shelter
Offshore there are three essential ingredients to having as happy a life
as possible. Without one of these, you’re going to feel there is something
lacking. And if you’re living abroad the feeling will be intensified by
feelings of isolation.
Accommodation
The first element is
accommodation. If you move abroad and your dream is a villa overlooking a
bay but you end up with a poorly constructed box on a building site, your
attempts to be happy will be overshadowed by your substandard
accommodation.
Realistic expectations
Research, caution and
realistic expectations are essential to achieving a state of happiness
with your accommodation.
Standard
Look at the standard of
build in the country you are going to live and accept that that is what
you probably end up with. Also be aware of individuals that play on the
greenness of newly arrived expats searching for a home.
Something
to do
The second element is
having something to do all day long. After two weeks of lying in the sun
by the pool of your new villa, you will be bored!
Job
Therefore, you will need
something that keeps your mind working, like a job or a volunteer job,
learning the language, teaching your language or joining a group of like
minded people.
Friends
The final element for
expat happiness is finding friends. When you move abroad you leave behin
not only your familiar surroundings but your friends and family too. A
feeling of isolation can quickly come up. You will have to make an active
effort to get out and meeting people.
Great
experience
Just get the basics right
and your life abroad will be a great experience!
